Why do we learn physical education?
At Ark Dickens, we want all children to leave the academy as competent and successful sports persons. Situated in a built-up area of Portsmouth, we know the importance of living a healthy and active lifestyle. Physical and mental health, wellbeing and approaches are a key part of the academies approach to delivering the best possible education. All children should leave the academy with a good understanding of how to keep themselves healthy and fit, able to work to goals, compete healthily and with a strong understanding of their physiology and psychology in order to keep themselves healthy in all facets of their life.

Our approach
In line with the National Curriculum Framework, pupils are taught using a holistic approach to physical education teaching along two strands: Sports and Fitness. We have developed an exciting curriculum engaging children in a wide variety of regular physical activities, as well as giving children the knowledge and information they need to make healthy choices to live well balanced lives.
- Sport: Our sports strand inspires pupils to succeed and excel in a broad range of competitive sport and physical activities. Key skills such as throwing and catching, passing, dribbling and keeping possession are developed across the year groups.
- Fitness: The aim of the fitness programme is to ensure that pupils receive regular exercise activity. Lessons are designed to raise the heart rate and improve overall fitness, stamina and flexibility. Units across the year and across the school develop flexibility and strength, cardiovascular fitness and stamina.
Throughout the year different after school clubs take place, which have included football, bench ball and multi-sports skills. Each class receives a sessions of PE per week in addition to the 'daily mile' We work alongside local schools and attend regular inter-school competitions and tournaments.
