Why do we learn reading?
By the time children leave Ark Dickens Primary School pupils have transferable skills that ensure they are confident readers that can enjoy a range of texts. They can make their own decisions about different texts, they can talk confidently about their own interest, likes and dislikes. Through receiving high quality reading we create well-read, enthusiastic, insightful and knowledgeable readers that will continue as readers later in life. It is essential that by the end of their primary education, all pupils are able to read fluently, and with confidence and in any subject. We hope that we fulfil our school’s vision; ‘be your best’ in the next stage of their lives to enable them to contribute positively to their community.

Our approach
At Ark Dickens, pupils are exposed to different reading genres through a variety of well-considered and diverse texts to create a love of reading. Children also learn about the key grammatical features that make up the English language and how they as readers can use these features to develop their reading fluency and expression. We believe that all pupils should be given access to high quality literature and these books are linked to the half-termly topic, with the aim of supporting the development of vocabulary and knowledge of the topic. The curriculum has been developed to focus and build on several core areas. Our journey begins with the Read Write Inc. synthetic phonics programme in Early Years which progresses to in depth class and independent reading lessons when children are ready. Key reading skills are taught throughout our reading programme such as; fluency and expression, prediction, inference, sequence, and summarising texts that they have read. Our pupils are exposed to a range of reading opportunities from visits to our school library, buddy reading scheme, diverse class reads. Our home reading scheme provides pupils with ability matched book as well as an own choice book for pleasure.
