Why do we learn music?
Pupils at Ark Dickens will leave the academy with the skills to ‘Be your Best’ as a result of well-planned, engaging lessons. In line with the national curriculum and as Musicians, they will be able to:
-Play and perform in ensemble contexts using their voices and playing musical instruments.
- Improvise and compose music for a range of purposes using the inter-related dimensions of music.
- Listen with attention to detail and recall sounds with increasing aural memory
- Use and understand staff and other musical notations.
- Appreciate and understand a wide range of high-quality live and recorded music drawn from different traditions and from great composers and musicians.
In addition, children will develop their understanding of the history of music.

Our approach
In line with the National Curriculum Framework, skills are embedded across all music lessons and are constantly revisited throughout pupils’ time at Ark Dickens. Each lesson starts with the children listening to a piece of live or recorded music in order to develop their appraisal skills and expose them to a range of music genres. With each unit focusing on a song, lessons will be constructed of the following to ensure they are purposeful and outcome driven:
- Appraisal
- Vocal Rehearsal
- Instrument Rehearsal (tuned and untuned)
-Performance
At the end of the unit, children are given the opportunity to appraise their own performance and the performance of others.
Leaders at Dickens will ensure that staff are well equipped with the knowledge and skills to plan engaging lessons that will spark curiosity in all learners.
